Activities for Families with Simon Tozer: Draw and Print your own Chapbook

Saturday 11 September, 12pm – 4pm

Activities for Families returns to selected Saturdays over the summer season with a range of printmaking workshops hosted by different artists and drawing club sessions for all the family. Activities for Families sees artists set up a temporary studio in the gallery allowing visitors to participate in a range of activities that reflect the artists’ own practice. To date we have offered sessions from making fanzines and creating fairytales to human scale animation workshops.

Join Simon to create your own Chapbooks…small and cheaply produced booklets sold by itinerant dealers, or chapmen, often illustrated with woodcuts. They contained tales of popular heroes, legend and folklore, jests, reports of notorious crimes, ballads, nursery rhymes, school lessons, farces, biblical tales, dream lore, and other popular matter. The texts were mostly crude and anonymous…

Using mono-screenprint methods along with simple but cunning paper folding techniques we will convert a corner of the gallery into a nineteenth century printshop. You will emerge as a (self) published graphic artist or writer.  This workshop is suitable for all ages: anyone in fact that can hold a pencil and has a story to tell.”

Free music course at Colston Hall, book quickly

Posted by jennyt2s on Wednesday Sep 23, 2009 under 8-12 years, activity, date specific, free

“Young people invited to ‘get inspired’ about music this autumn with Remix and Sing Up!

Young people in Bristol, aged seven to 11 are invited to ‘get inspired’ about music this Saturday, September 26 by signing up for a five-week music-making course at Colston Hall.

Remix, Bristol’s Youth Music Action Zone, is running the course alongside Sing Up! – the government’s national singing programme. Both schemes are aimed at getting young people more involved with singing and music-making and are hosted by Colston Hall.

Children will take part in hands-on singing, song-writing and percussion workshops led by experienced tutors and will learn to play instruments and record and write their own music. No musical experience is necessary – children are welcome to attend even if they’ve never tried anything musical before.

Remix’s Director, Mijanou Blech, said: ‘Remix is all about getting young people to give music-making a try no matter what their ability. This course is a great opportunity for children to try different activities and hopefully discover a talent and a passion for music they never knew they had.’

To book a place on the sessions call Colston Hall Box Office on tel. 0117 922 3686.” details from this link

I’ve phoned Colston Hall to get some more information but had trouble getting through to the right person. The morning sessions are now booked, but if you move quickly you may be able to get a place for the afternoon course 1-3pm. The course seems to be free. I wasn’t able to find out about accessibility issues, so you’ll need to check support and access issues if you book.

Posted by jennyt2s on Monday Sep 14, 2009 under Bristol Events, date specific

Bristol sci-fi fans who know their lightsabres from their sonic screwdrivers will be glad to know a science fiction convention is headed to the city.

The one-day event is due to be held on Saturday, September 26 at Mercure Holland House Hotel and Spa, Redcliffe Hill.

If it proves popular, organisers say the convention could become an annual event.

There will be discussion panels, trade stands, book signings, live music and a bar.

Discussions will revolve around such hot topics as “UK vs US science fiction, which is better?” and “The differences between fantasy and science fiction.”

For more information read this article or this website: www.kumara.org.uk/. Tickets for the convention are £20, but the film on the Friday night is £5.
